UO:R Web Client Player Guide
Getting Started, Features, Performance Tuning, and Browser Play in UO:Renaissance.

⚠ Beta Stage Notice The UO:Renaissance Web Client is currently in active beta testing. You may encounter minor visual quirks or rough edges as ongoing updates roll out. If you spot any issues or strange behavior, your feedback on the official forums or Discord is super helpful!

Overview: Playing UO:R in Your Browser

The UO:R Web Client runs ClassicUO directly inside modern web browsers using WebAssembly (WASM), paired with a modern React HUD. It provides full access to the UO:Renaissance shard with zero desktop installation required.

  • Play Immediately: https://web.uorenn.com/
  • Direct Browser Play: Everything runs inside your browser tab. No legacy desktop installers, compatibility mode tweaks, or Windows registry configurations needed.
  • Discord-Only Authentication: Login is handled exclusively via Discord. Signing in ties your game profile, hotkeys, and macros to your Discord ID so your custom settings follow you to any computer or device.
  • Automatic Delta Patching: Shard updates and game files stream in small chunks from a global content delivery network (CDN) directly into your local browser storage.
  • Built-in Modern Assistant: Comes equipped out-of-the-box with custom UI tooltips, grid indicators, and macroing utilities built specifically for UO:Renaissance.
  • Desktop Macro Import: Already have macros on desktop ClassicUO? Click your profile avatar in the top-right corner and select "Import from desktop ClassicUO" to migrate your existing setup instantly.

Official FAQ & Community Discussion

For the complete player FAQ, server rules, macroing guidelines, and community troubleshooting, please refer to the official forum thread by staff:

System & Browser Requirements

Recommended Browsers Chromium-based: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera (provide optimal WebAssembly and storage performance)
Graphics Support Hardware Acceleration enabled (WebGL & GPU rasterization)
Local Drive Space 5–10 GB free space required for cached map, sound, and art files
Connection Type Low-latency WebSocket Anycast GameProxy connection (30+ global points of presence)

Never Use Incognito / Private Browsing Mode:
Private windows automatically disable the browser's persistent Origin Private File System (OPFS). If you launch the game in Incognito mode, your browser cannot save assets to disk, forcing you to re-download several gigabytes of game data every single time you open the tab.

Performance & Lag Optimization

If gameplay feels sluggish, stutters while walking, or drives up your laptop fan speeds, work through these recommended optimizations:

  1. Step 1: Verify Hardware Acceleration
    • Navigate to chrome://settings/?search=Use+graphics+acceleration+when+available in Chrome (or edge://settings/system in Edge) and verify that **"Use graphics acceleration when available"** is toggled **ON**.
    • You can verify your GPU status anytime by visiting chrome://gpu; WebGL and Canvas should display as Hardware accelerated in green.
  2. Step 2: Force High-Performance GPU (Laptops)
    • Gaming laptops frequently assign browser tabs to low-power integrated graphics (iGPU) to conserve battery.
    • Enter chrome://flags/#force-high-performance-gpu in your browser address bar, set it to **Enabled**, and restart your browser.
  3. Step 3: Bypass GPU Blocklists
    • If your graphics card is flagged as software rendering only, go to chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist, set it to **Enabled**, and relaunch.
  4. Step 4: Switch Graphics Backend to DirectX 11 (Windows)
    • In Chromium address bar, visit chrome://flags/#use-angle and switch the backend from Default to **D3D11**. This tweak eliminates micro-stutters for many Windows players.
  5. Step 5: Cap Your In-Game FPS
    • Running uncapped frames creates unnecessary GPU heat and frame pacing jitter. Press Alt+O in-game to open **Options > Video**, and set your **Maximum FPS** to match your monitor's refresh rate (e.g., 60, 120, or 144 Hz).
  6. Step 6: Set Game Loop Scheduler to Immediate
    • Under in-game **Options > Video**, set the **Game Loop Scheduler** to **Immediate** for the most responsive input latency.
  7. Step 7: Disable Chrome Energy Saver
    • In Chrome **Settings > Performance**, disable **Energy Saver** so the browser does not throttle tab execution while running.

Gaming VPNs & Network Routing (ExitLag)

Browsers cannot open raw TCP sockets due to web security restrictions. Instead, the UO:R Web Client routes game traffic through dedicated low-latency WebSocket Anycast GameProxies placed across 30+ locations worldwide.

  • Configuring ExitLag: Do not point ExitLag at old desktop client EXEs. Instead, add your dedicated browser's executable (e.g., chrome.exe, msedge.exe, or brave.exe) to ExitLag so it routes your browser's gaming traffic directly.
  • Standard VPNs (Mullvad, Nord, PIA, etc.): Select a VPN server location closest to the UO:R shard host to minimize network hops between the Anycast WebSocket proxy and the shard.

Quick Troubleshooting Reference

Issue / Symptom Root Cause Recommended Fix
Low FPS / High CPU Usage Hardware acceleration is disabled or running on integrated CPU graphics Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in settings; set #force-high-performance-gpu and #use-angle to D3D11.
Re-downloading game files on every launch Incognito/Private mode is active, or local drive has insufficient storage Avoid private browsing windows; ensure your computer drive has at least 5–10 GB of free disk space.
Micro-stuttering while moving Uncapped framerate causing frame pacing mismatch Press Alt+O > Video: cap Maximum FPS to match screen refresh rate (60/120/144 Hz).
Stalled asset downloads during first load Ad/script blocker extensions blocking chunk requests Temporarily whitelist web.uorenn.com in ad-blocking extensions (e.g. uBlock Origin).
ExitLag not routing traffic ExitLag is linked to legacy desktop game executable Add your browser's executable (e.g. msedge.exe or chrome.exe) to ExitLag application routes.
